One of Asia’s well-preserved colonial forts, Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has a romantic atmosphere thanks to its winding cobblestone streets, ramparts, and lighthouse. Included in the historical sites within the fort are the island’s oldest breadfruit tree and the National Maritime Museum which displays marine artifacts from shipwreck explorations along the Southern Coast. After that take a tranquil Madu River cruise where you can see wildlife up close and visit small islands. You can also go to the turtle hatchery at Kosgoda Beach which raises sea turtle eggs before releasing them into the ocean in an effort to save endangered species. Visit Unawatuna Beach for a day, it’s a serene cove with palm trees encircling it, perfect for relaxing. Fishing from stilts in shallow waters is a distinctive fishing tradition in Weligama. This sandy village boasts an extensive expanse of superb golden sand.
